The End of the Old Way: Becoming a Champion

Jackie Magnuson, a graduate of the March 31, 2008 Triage Specialist Course (TSC), succinctly summarizes the purpose of becoming a Triage First Educator with one statement:"Here is to the end of the old way!" Most emergency nurses would readily agree that "the old way" of triage is broken, fragmented, chaotic, and often unsafe for both patients and staff. Steve Russell, a graduate of the December 3, 2007 TSC phrases it this way:"For the first time in my 20-year nursing career, the pieces of triage fit together for me as a system of ED patient care and throughput rather than simply a focused process of assigning an acuity and disposition. It also increased my self-awareness of how bias can creep into patient-care decisions and how I can articulate the danger of bias to my peers."

Changing the "old way" of triage will never be an easy endeavor and will require the commitment, passion, and dedication of those willing to step forward. Our TSC graduates have. Jackie further shares that "The Triage Specialist Course is an outstanding, comprehensive course that provides you with the tools and knowledge to become a champion within your own facility to improve your triage process." As our graduates share their newly gained knowledge and enable lasting change at their facilities, our hope for improving and standardizing triage is renewed. What will future generations of emergency nurses say about our generation's contribution to emergency nursing and triage?

It depends on you. Be a champion: The time is now.
