Welcome!

Message from the President

Triage First is celebrating our 11th year of promoting the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report’s goals as part of our curriculum. Tens of thousands of emergency department nurses across the United States have joined us in responding to the challenges set forth in these reports through a long and sustained commitment to change and improve our efforts in providing patient-focused care, especially in Point-of-Entry processes.

In the 2001 IOM Report – Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century – six aims were identified.

1. Safe: avoiding injuries to patients from the care that is intended to help them.
2. Effective: providing services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit, and refraining from providing services to those not likely to benefit.
3. Patient-centered: providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all decisions.
4. Timely: reducing waits and sometimes harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care.
5. Efficient: avoiding waste, including waste of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy.
6. Equitable: providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.

An examination of our Triage First Education: Comprehensive Emergency Department Triage Course® would reveal these 6 aims woven intricately throughout our content. Triage First has a history of promoting a comprehensive and holistic understanding of emergency department triage and related processes. This includes clinically expert assessment and treatment of patients presenting to the ED and thorough evaluation and implementation of patient-focused, evidence-based point-of-entry process management.

Further in the IOM Report, Ten Rules for Redesign were established to help in achieving the 6 aims outlined above. These rules for redesign have guided Triage First as we have developed our products and services, including:

• Facility-specific Course Tailoring
• Coaching
• Mentoring
• Train-the-Trainer Program (Triage Specialist Course)
• Consulting & Implementation Services and Products, such as our electronic action item log – EDCQI

Through our “Pathway to Competency,” Triage First offers a wide range of products to assist in hardwiring the important concepts from our education, such as:

• Reference Aids*
• Wall Posters*
• Online Modules – 5-Level Acuity* and Clinical
• CONTACTS – a continuing education annual subscription service, which offers a quarterly review of 9 interactive patient scenarios and 1 multiple case scenario. It incorporates not only clinical presentations and decisions regarding acuity and disposition, but also process issues and personal and professional triggers and biases which might impact the decision-making process.

*available as ESI or modified CTAS

In addition to the thousands of nurses who have joined us in making the commitment to increase the level of patient care in the Emergency Department, many physicians have also joined us on our journey. Every emergency department that has included the ED physicians and management in our education has experienced the highest level of change, teamwork, and improvement in their ED environment as a whole.

As the nation’s healthcare challenges continue to evolve, you can count on Triage First to forge ahead with relevant, up-to-date, and effective educational products and services.

Triage Specialist Course Still Open

Did you know that the Triage Specialist Course is not merely a train-the-trainer program? Yes, that’s a part of it, but only a small part. The primary focus is on content – what to teach and how to teach it effectively within a context of chart review, physical plant layouts (blueprints), particular ED cultures, politics of change, change implementation, clinical expertise and presentations, etc., etc., etc. The last day of the course then focuses on competency, with written and oral examinations.

Upon successful completion of the course, the graduate is licensed to teach the Comprehensive Emergency Department Triage Course® to their hospital, system, or community alliance. Everything that is needed to teach the course is included – materials, lecture notes, evaluation forms, workbooks, updates, support, etc. But, it gets better! In addition to being licensed to teach, they become THE resource nurse for everything triage.

Discounts available for established clients of Triage First. Call 828-628-8022 for details.

The next Triage Specialist Course is August 1-6, 2010. Apply now, space is limited.
