Triage Specialist Course
|
Message from the President The Triage Specialist Course – Comprehensive Training for the Triage Educator is now entering its third year! This course was developed to provide hospitals the opportunity to have one of their top emergency department nurses become a Triage First Educator, allowing them to provide on-going training as needed. Each participant who successfully completes the Triage Specialist Course is licensed to teach the Triage First EDucation: Comprehensive Emergency Department Triage Course (a two-day course) to all emergency department employees at their hospital or hospital system. The first Triage Specialist Course of this type was held in December 2007. Since that time, nearly 90 top-notch nurses have graduated and been licensed to teach. In the last two years, our graduates have held over 200 workshops – teaching over 2600 individual nurses. It is exciting to see the impact on emergency department care that is taking place across the country because of this training! Triage First Educator’s have had great success, as is noted in comments received from their participants. Without a doubt, this was the single best healthcare related training I’ve ever attended. It was relevant, comprehensive, informative, and [the educators] presented as true experts in the subject matter. – S. Domingue It was taught by experienced nurses who have been in our shoes and our environment. Excellent educational tool for triage and also help with coping in the ER on a daily basis. – J. Dreher As great as these comments are from individual nurses, it’s even more exciting to see the results within a hospital speak for themselves. One hospital system in California has two Triage First Educators on staff and they shared their experience with us: I just wanted to write a quick note to tell you of the improvements in our department. [We] have taught 8 classes and approximately 110 nurses. Prior to beginning the Triage First education, our ESI scores were right around 53% [accuracy]. In the last few months we have seen our scores jump to 92% [accuracy]. Our patient satisfaction scores have also improved dramatically. The nurses are actually excited about triage again. Patients will sometimes come back by triage on their way out to thank one of the nurses again.” – Amy Hannickel, Triage First Educator Another hospital system, also in California, has two Triage First Educators as well. Their commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence, as well as their commitment to better educate and serve their community, has earned them system-wide recognition in a system publication. We are humbled by their drive and achievements, and more especially by their willingness to join with us. I am anticipating even greater success stories in 2010. I encourage you and/or others in your facility to become a part of this exceptional team. Our next Triage Specialist Course is just around the corner – March 14-19, 2010. We are still accepting applications, but space is limited. Get your application in today to reserve your space. Education Opportunity
